    Production-decay interferences at NLO in QCD for t-channel single-top production

    We present a calculation of O(\alpha_s) contributions to the process of t-channel single-top production and decay, which include virtual and real corrections arising from interference of the production and decay subprocesses. The calculation is organized as a simultaneous expansion of the matrix elements in the couplings \alpha_{ew},\alpha_s and the virtuality of the intermediate top quark, (p_t^2-m_t^2)/m_t^2 ~ \Gamma_t/m_t, and extends earlier results beyond the narrow-width approximation.Comment: 33 pages, 6 Figure

    High-resolution 3D weld toe stress analysis and ACPD method for weld toe fatigue crack initiation

    Weld toe fatigue crack initiation is highly dependent on the local weld toe stress-concentrating geometry including any inherent flaws. These flaws are responsible for premature fatigue crack initiation (FCI) and must be minimised to maximise the fatigue life of a welded joint. In this work, a data-rich methodology has been developed to capture the true weld toe geometry and resulting local weld toe stress-field and relate this to the FCI life of a steel arc-welded joint. To obtain FCI lives, interrupted fatigue test was performed on the welded joint monitored by a novel multi-probe array of alternating current potential drop (ACPD) probes across the weld toe. This setup enabled the FCI sites to be located and the FCI life to be determined and gave an indication of early fatigue crack propagation rates. To understand fully the local weld toe stress-field, high-resolution (5 mu m) 3D linear-elastic finite element (FE) models were generated from X-ray micro-computed tomography (mu-CT) of each weld toe after fatigue testing. From these models, approximately 202 stress concentration factors (SCFs) were computed for every 1 mm of weld toe.     Nuclear liquid-gas phase transition and supernovae evolution

    It is shown that the large density fluctuations appearing at the onset of the first order nuclear liquid-gas phase transition can play an important role in the supernovae evolution. Due to these fluctuations, the neutrino gas may be trapped inside a thin layer of matter near the proto-neutron star surface. The resulting increase of pressure may induce strong particle ejection a few hundred milliseconds after the bounce of the collapse, contributing to the revival of the shock wave. The Hartree-Fock+RPA scheme, with a finite-range nucleon-nucleon effective interaction, is employed to estimate the effects of the neutrino trapping due to the strong density fluctuations, and to discuss qualitatively the consequences of the suggested new scenario.Comment: version2 - precise that nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is 1st order and the unique instable mode is isoscala

    Quantifying parasitic losses from metal scattering structures in solar cells: How uncertainty in optical constants affects simulation results

    The optical constants of many metals commonly used in solar cells, e.g. as contacts or for light trapping structures, are not documented consistently in the literature, with different sources giving different values. In the case of metallic structures designed to improve absorption in a solar cell junction, the use of data from different sources can give strongly varying results for the effectiveness of nanophotonic light-trapping structures. The trade-off between diffraction into more oblique orders in the junction, enhancing absorption in the photovoltaic material, and the number of photons absorbed parasitically in the metal means small differences in the optical constants can lead to different very conclusions about the EQE and J SC . This work documents the different optical constants for silver, aluminium, gold and titanium from several sources, the effect this has on plasmon quality factors, and quantifies the effect on modelling outcomes by considering the optimization of a test structure using a grid of metal nanodisks on the front surface of a thinned-down GaAs cell. Finally, we consider the effect for a structure previously predicted to give a very high J SC for a solar cell with an ultra-thin GaAs layer

    The management of subjective quality of life by short-stay hospital patients: An exploratory study

    BACKGROUND: This study tested the homeostatic model of subjective quality of life in a group of 47 short stay patients as they progressed through the stages of hospitalization for surgery. METHOD: Participants completed a questionnaire measuring subjective quality of life, positive and negative affect, self-esteem, optimism and cognitive flexibility, the day prior to admission (T1), two days post-operation (T2) and one week after discharge (T3). Neuroticism and Extroversion were measured at Time 1. RESULTS: All variables remained stable across the three times, apart from positive affect, which dropped significantly post-operation but returned to its previous level post discharge. CONCLUSION: Although the homeostatic model of subjective quality of life was supported at Time 1, the analyses raise doubts about the stability of personality. This finding is consistent with recent discussions of personality

    Cosmic Censorship: As Strong As Ever

    Spacetimes which have been considered counter-examples to strong cosmic censorship are revisited. We demonstrate the classical instability of the Cauchy horizon inside charged black holes embedded in de Sitter spacetime for all values of the physical parameters. The relevant modes which maintain the instability, in the regime which was previously considered stable, originate as outgoing modes near to the black hole event horizon. This same mechanism is also relevant for the instability of Cauchy horizons in other proposed counter-examples of strong cosmic censorship.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX style, 1 figure included using epsfi

    Working memory capacity and surgical performance whilst exposed to mild hypoxic hypoxaemia (3000m)

    INTRODUCTION: Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) helicopters fly at altitudes of 3,000m in Afghanistan (9,843ft). Civilian hospitals and disaster-relief surgical teams may have to operate at such altitudes or even higher. Mild hypoxia has been seen to affect the performance of novel tasks at flight levels as low as 5,000ft. Aeromedical teams frequently work in unpressurised environments; it is important to understand the implications of this mild hypoxia and investigate whether supplementary oxygen systems are required for some or all of the team members. METHODS: Ten UK orthopaedic surgeons were recruited and in a double blind randomised experimental protocol, were acutely exposed for 45 minutes to normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) ~14.1% - equivalent to 3000m/10,000ft) or normobaric normoxia (sea-level). Basic physiological parameters were recorded. Subjects completed validated tests of verbal working memory capacity (VWMC) and also applied an orthopaedic external fixator (Hoffmann® 3, Stryker UK) to a plastic tibia under test conditions. RESULTS: Significant hypoxia was induced with the reduction of FiO2 to ~14.1% (SpO2 87% vs. 98%). No effect of hypoxia on VWMC was observed. The pin-divergence score (a measure of frame asymmetry) was significantly greater in hypoxic conditions (4.6mm) compared to sea level (3.0mm), there was no significant difference in the penetrance depth (16.9 vs. 17.2mm). One frame would have failed early. DISCUSSION: We believe that surgery at an altitude of 3000m when unacclimated individuals are acutely exposed to atmospheric hypoxia for 45 minutes, can likely take place without supplemental oxygen use but further work is required

    Pair Creation of Black Holes by Domain Walls

    In this paper we study the production of pairs of neutral and charged black holes by domain walls, finding classical solutions and calculating their classical actions. We find that neutral black holes whose creation is mediated by Euclidean instantons must be produced mutually at rest with respect to one another, but for charged black holes a new type of instanton is possible in which after formation the two black holes accelerate away from one another. These new types of instantons are not possible in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant. We also find that the creation of non-orientable black hole solutions can be mediated by Euclidean instantons and that in addition if one is prepared to consider entirely Lorentzian no-boundary type contributions to the path integral then mutually accelerating pairs may be created even in the neutral case. Finally we consider the production of Kaluza-Klein monopoles both by a standard cosmological term and in the presence of a domain wall.     Birthweight, HIV exposure and infant feeding as predictors of malnutrition in Botswanan infants

    Background: A better understanding of the nutritional status of infants who are HIV-Exposed-Uninfected (HEU) and HIV-Unexposed-Uninfected (HUU) during their first 1000 days is key to improving population health, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: A cross-sectional study compared the nutritional status, feeding practices and determinants of nutritional status of HEU and HUU infants residing in representative selected districts in Botswana during their first 1000 days of life. Four hundred and thirteen infants (37.3% HIV-exposed), aged 6–24 months, attending routine child health clinics, were recruited. Anthropometric, 24-h dietary intake and socio-demographic data was collected. Anthropometric Z-scores were calculated using 2006 World Health Organization growth standards. Modelling of the determinants of malnutrition was undertaken using logistic regression. Results: Overall, the prevalences of stunting, wasting and being underweight were 10.4%, 11.9% and 10.2%, respectively. HEU infants were more likely to be underweight (15.6% versus 6.9%), (P &lt; 0.01) and stunted (15.6% versus 7.3%), (P &lt; 0.05) but not wasted (P = 0.14) than HUU infants. HEU infants tended to be formula fed (82.5%), whereas HUU infants tended to breastfeed (94%) for the first 6 months (P &lt; 0.001). Significant predictors of nutritional status were HIV exposure, birthweight, birth length, APGAR (appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration) score and mother/caregiver's education with little influence of socio-economic status. Conclusions: HEU infants aged 6–24 months had worse nutritional status compared to HUU infants. Low birthweight was the main predictor of undernutrition in this population. Optimisation of infant nutritional status should focus on improving birthweight. In addition, specific interventions should target HEU infants aiming to eliminate growth disparity between HEU and HUU infants.</p

    Characterization of the nonequilibrium steady state of a heterogeneous nonlinear q-voter model with zealotry

    We introduce an heterogeneous nonlinear q-voter model with zealots and two types of susceptible voters, and study its non-equilibrium properties when the population is finite and well mixed. In this two-opinion model, each individual supports one of two parties and is either a zealot or a susceptible voter of type q1 or q2. While here zealots never change their opinion, a qi-susceptible voter (i = 1, 2) consults a group of qi neighbors at each time step, and adopts their opinion if all group members agree. We show that this model violates the detailed balance whenever q1 ≠ q2 and has surprisingly rich properties. Here, we focus on the characterization of the model’s non-equilibrium stationary state (NESS) in terms of its probability distribution and currents in the distinct regimes of low and high density of zealotry. We unveil the NESS properties in each of these phases by computing the opinion distribution and the circulation of probability currents, as well as the two-point correlation functions at unequal times (formally related to a “probability angular momentum”). Our analytical calculations obtained in the realm of a linear Gaussian approximation are compared with numerical results
